About the Hamlet of Smithtown

The hamlet is home to about 25,600 people and gives its name to the whole town, which grew out of the land patent granted to Richard Smith in 1665. At the fork where Jericho Turnpike (Route 25) and Route 25A split stands Whisper, the bronze bull tied to the story of Smith riding a bull to mark out his land — a story local historians consider a legend, but one everybody here knows.

Along Main Street sits the Village of the Branch, a small incorporated village with some of the oldest buildings in town. To the west, where the road drops toward the Nissequogue River, is The Landing, once its own village before it was dissolved in 1939. Caleb Smith State Park Preserve and Blydenburgh County Park bracket the hamlet with woods and water, and the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch stops at Smithtown station.

Smithtown Houses and Their Garages

Drive the side streets off Route 111, Edgewood Avenue or Landing Avenue and you see what most of our work looks like: ranches, colonials and split-levels from the town's growth years, with the median house in the hamlet built around the mid-1960s. Many still have the original jamb framing, now holding their second or third door.

What we see most here:

  • Springs that have simply run out of cycles. A busy household, a two-car garage, and springs that were last replaced when the kids were small.
  • Openers from the 1990s and 2000s with stripped gears or a failing board, often a good time to move to a quieter belt drive.
  • Detached garages near the Branch on older lots, with narrower openings, older wood doors and sometimes no power for an opener.
  • Doors that have changed weight — a door insulated by an owner years ago, or a heavy replacement section — still on springs sized for the old door.

Older Homes Near the Branch and The Landing

Houses near Main Street and down by the river are older than the average Smithtown home. On those properties we often find a detached one- or two-car garage with a door that has been repaired many times, extension springs instead of torsion, and hardware that has been painted over. We can convert extension springs to torsion (from $595), which makes the door safer and smoother, or replace the door with a carriage-house or wood door that suits the house.

The Village of the Branch has its own village government, so for a new door there it is worth asking about design review before ordering.

Getting Around the Hamlet

Jericho Turnpike, Route 25A, Route 111 and Route 347 all pass through or by the hamlet, so our trucks are in Smithtown most working days. When you call, tell us the cross street and what the door is doing. If the car is stuck inside, say so — we try to fit those calls in the same day when a technician is free.

A Smithtown Homeowner's Yearly Garage Door Check

Ten minutes in the fall saves most of the emergency calls we get in January. With the door closed:

  1. Look at the spring bar above the door. Any gap in the coils, or rust bands across them?
  2. Look at the cables at the bottom corners. Any broken strands or rust where they hook on?
  3. Pull the opener's red release cord and lift the door to waist height. Does it stay, or slide?
  4. Run the door with the opener and watch the rollers. Any wobble, or a roller rubbing the track?
  5. Lay a roll of paper towels under the door and close it. It should reverse when it touches.
  6. Check the bottom seal. Daylight at the corners means cold air and water get in.

Anything off? Call us. A tune-up is from $135.

Schools, Parks and Errands — the Garage Gets Used

Smithtown hamlet families are busy: the Smithtown Central School District's schools, practices at the parks, trips to the stores along Main Street and Route 111, a commute from Smithtown station. Most of those trips start and end in the garage. That's good for convenience and hard on springs and openers. If your door goes up and down six or eight times a day, ask about high-cycle springs (from $545 a pair) next time they're replaced, and consider a belt-drive opener with battery backup so the garage stays usable in a storm.

The hamlet is inland, so the hardware here wears from use and weather rather than salt — except on the riverside streets near The Landing, where the Nissequogue's tidal water is close by and we keep a closer eye on rust.
