Commack, Old and New

Commack's history runs deeper than its post-war subdivisions. The Commack Methodist Church, built in 1789, is considered the oldest Methodist church building in New York State, and the Harned Brothers sawmill is a reminder of the area's farming past. For many Long Islanders, though, Commack means the Long Island Arena, where the New York Nets played in 1968–69 before the arena was demolished in 1996.

Today the hamlet is mostly suburban, with Jericho Turnpike, Veterans Memorial Highway and the Sagtikos and Northern State parkways running through or nearby. The Commack school district serves most of it.

Springs on 16-Foot Doors

A 16-foot double door is the standard on Commack colonials and many of its ranches. It's a heavy door — far heavier if it's insulated, wood or has a row of windows — and it's usually carried by two torsion springs. When one breaks, the second is close behind, so we nearly always replace both (from $489).

A heavier door means a bigger spring, and some double doors installed years ago were fitted with springs that were a little small, leaving the opener to make up the difference. When we replace them, we size to the door's real weight. You'll notice: the door lifts lightly by hand, and the opener sounds less strained.

Not all of Commack is post-war. Near the old church and along the older roads there are houses from well before the subdivisions, a few with detached garages and older doors.
