Garage Door Panel Replacement in Smithtown

Backed into the garage door? Dented a section with the snowblower? We replace damaged garage door sections when a match is still made — from $265 per section — and tell you honestly when a new door makes more sense than patching an old one.

Quick answer

Can you replace a single garage door section in Smithtown? Yes, when the section is still made for your door. One section starts at $265. We take the door's make, model and size, order the matching section, and install it with new hinges where needed. If no match exists, we price a new door so you can compare.

01

How a Garage Door Is Built in Sections

A residential sectional door is made of four or five horizontal sections joined by hinges. Each section has its own rollers on both ends, and the bottom section carries the bottom brackets that the lift cables hook into. That design is what lets the door curve up and back into the garage — and it's also why one damaged section can often be swapped without replacing the whole door.

The bottom section takes most of the abuse: bumpers, snowblowers, trash cans, kids' bikes. It also sits in the water and slush at the threshold, so on older steel doors it is often the one that rusts through first, and on wood doors it is the one that rots.

When we look at a damaged door, we check the section itself, the hinges on either side of it, the rollers and the track on the side that took the hit, and the bottom bracket and cable if it's the bottom section.

When One Section Is Enough

  • Only one section is creased or dented, and the others are straight.
  • The door is a current model, so the section is still available in your size and style.
  • The rest of the door is in good shape — no rust-through, no rot, springs and cables sound.
  • You like the door and just want it to look right again.

In that case a section replacement is the sensible repair. It usually takes one visit to measure and order, and a second to install once the section arrives.

When a New Door Makes More Sense

  • Two or more sections are damaged.
  • The door model is discontinued and nothing matches.
  • The door is a thin, uninsulated steel door from decades ago and you'd like a warmer, quieter garage.
  • The wood is rotting in several places, not only at the bottom.
  • Section cost plus labor is approaching the price of a new insulated door.

We'll put the two numbers side by side. New single steel doors start at $1,575; see new garage doors and the repair-or-replace guide.

Dents, Rust and Rot — What We See Around Smithtown

Dents in thin steel

Many original doors from the town's building boom are single-layer steel. They dent from a basketball. Insulated, steel-backed doors are much stiffer.

Rust at the bottom

Where the driveway slopes toward the garage, water sits against the bottom section. Paint fails, then the steel. A good bottom seal and a slab that drains away help.

Wood doors in older homes

In St. James, Head of the Harbor and the older parts of Smithtown there are wood doors that are decades old. A rotted bottom section can sometimes be rebuilt by a carpenter; we'll tell you what's realistic.

05

After an Impact: Is the Door Safe to Use?

If a car or a mower hit the door, look before you press the button. A bent section can push rollers out of the track, and a damaged bottom section can loosen the bottom bracket that holds the cable. If the door looks crooked, a roller is out, or a cable is slack, don't run it. Unplug the opener and call.

If the dent is cosmetic and the door still runs smoothly and evenly, it's fine to keep using it until the new section arrives.

How We Order a Matching Section

Every residential door carries a label, usually on the inside edge of a section or on the end stile: the maker, the model, sometimes the date. We photograph it, measure the width and the section height, note the panel design, color and any window pattern, and check with the manufacturer or distributor whether that exact section is still made.

If it is, we give you a written price and order it. When it comes in, the swap usually takes a couple of hours: the door is clamped, the springs are unwound, the old section comes out with its hinges, the new one goes in, and the door is re-balanced and tested.

If the section is no longer made, we'll tell you right away rather than trying to make a close-but-wrong panel fit. Sometimes a section from a similar line works; often a new door is the cleaner answer.

Small Damage You Can Live With

Not every dent needs fixing. A shallow ding in one panel that doesn't crease the steel or affect how the door runs is cosmetic. Keep it painted so it doesn't rust, and keep using the door.

What's not cosmetic: a crease across the section, a bent end stile where the hinges and rollers attach, a cracked section on a wood door, or anything that makes the door rub or bind. Those weaken the door and can pull the rollers out of line. If you're not sure, send a photo by text to (631) 881-8120 and we'll tell you which it is.

Garage Door Panel Questions

Straight answers with our starting prices. Last updated October 2026.

Can you replace just one panel on a garage door?

Often, yes. If the manufacturer still makes the section for your door's model, size and color, we replace only the damaged one, starting at $265 per section. On older or discontinued doors a match may not exist, and then we show you the cost of a new door next to the repair.

How much does it cost to replace a garage door section?

Replacing one section starts at $265, plus hinges or a bottom bracket if they were damaged. Window inserts start at $425 when the section has glass. If more than two sections are damaged, a new door is often the better buy.

Can a dented garage door panel be fixed?

Small dents in steel panels can sometimes be pushed out, but steel stretches when it dents, so it rarely looks perfect. A dent that has creased the panel, cracked the paint or bent the section's end stiles usually means a new section.

Should I repair or replace a garage door after a car hit it?

It depends on how many sections are bent and whether the tracks were damaged. A single bent bottom section is usually a repair. When the car pushed in two or three sections or bent the tracks, a new door often costs only a little more and comes with a new warranty.

Will a new section match my old garage door?

If the door is a current model from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton or CHI, we can usually order a matching section. Color can differ slightly because the old door has faded in the sun. On doors more than about 15 years old, the panel style may be discontinued.
