Off-Track Garage Door Repair in Smithtown

If your garage door has jumped its track, is hanging at an angle or shudders as it moves, we put it back, straighten or replace bent track, and swap out worn rollers. An off-track reset starts at $185; a full set of quiet nylon rollers starts at $189.

Quick answer

My garage door is off the track — what should I do? Leave it exactly where it is. Unplug the opener, don't try to push the door back in or lift it, and keep everyone clear. Call (631) 881-8120. We secure the door first, then re-set it in the track and fix whatever knocked it out.

How a Door Rides in Its Tracks

A sectional garage door has a roller at each hinge line on both sides — usually ten to fourteen rollers on a residential door. They run in two steel tracks: a vertical track beside the opening, a curved piece at the top, and a horizontal track that runs back toward the ceiling. The track is held to the wall and ceiling by brackets and lag screws.

When everything is aligned, the door glides. When a roller wears, a bracket loosens or a track gets bent, the door starts to bind, shudder or rub, and eventually a roller can pop out. On a door with a broken cable or spring, one side may drop and pull the rollers right out of the track.

Most of the off-track doors we see around Smithtown were bumped — by a car backing out, a snowblower, a kid's bike. The rest are worn hardware that finally gave up.

Early Warnings Before a Door Leaves the Track

A door rarely jumps the track without warning. Watch and listen for:

  • A gap between the rollers and the track on one side, or rollers sitting at an angle.
  • Scraping or a grinding rumble as the door passes a certain point.
  • The door jerking or hesitating on the way up.
  • Loose lag screws or a wobbling track bracket on the wall.
  • A track that is visibly bent, dented or out of plumb.
  • Cracked hinges between the sections, especially the center hinges.

Catching these early turns an emergency into a simple adjustment. Our tune-up covers all of it.

Steel Rollers vs. Nylon Rollers

Many older doors in the town still run on the plain steel rollers they came with. They work, but they are loud, they wear flat spots, and they grind against the track. Replacing them with sealed-bearing nylon rollers is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make for the money — the door runs quieter and smoother, and the opener works less.

On a split-level or hi-ranch where the garage sits under a bedroom, that matters. Nylon rollers, a few drops of lubricant on the hinges, and a well-adjusted opener take most of the noise out. See noisy garage door repair for more.

Bottom rollers are the exception: they sit in the bottom bracket, which is under spring tension. Those we replace only with the tension released.

How We Re-Set an Off-Track Door

  1. Make it safe

Clamp the door so it can't move, then release the spring tension if a cable or spring is involved.

  2. Free the door

Open the track where needed, guide the rollers back in, straighten or replace bent sections and tighten every bracket.

  3. Fix the cause

Replace worn rollers, cracked hinges or a broken cable; re-balance the springs; check the opener's force and the sensors.

Track Alignment on Older Garages

Garages built in the '50s through the '70s — most of the town — often have settled jambs, a sloping slab, or a header that was never quite level. A door that was installed true decades ago can slowly drift out of square. We shim and re-hang tracks to match the opening you have today, so the door doesn't bind in one corner.

On garages where the slab has heaved, the door may also leave a gap at the bottom on one side. A new bottom seal (from $135) usually closes it.

Off-Track Calls Across the Town

We handle off-track doors from Commack and Hauppauge to St. James and Fort Salonga. A door that is stuck open with your car inside, or stuck closed with the car inside, is the kind of call we try to get to the same day. On Sunday it counts as an emergency — see same-day and Sunday service.

Car hit the door? A bent bottom section may need replacing too: panel and section replacement.

Off-Track Door and Roller Questions

Straight answers with our starting prices. Last updated October 2026.

How much does it cost to fix a garage door that came off the track?

An off-track reset and re-hook starts at $185. If a track is bent, straightening starts at $135; a damaged track section starts at $210. Worn rollers start at $45 each or $189 for a full nylon set.

Why did my garage door come off the track?

The usual causes are a car or a lawnmower bumping the door or track, a broken cable or spring that lets one side drop, worn rollers that pop out of the track, or loose track brackets that let the track spread apart. We fix the door and the cause.

Is an off-track garage door dangerous?

Yes. A door that is partly out of its tracks is no longer guided, and the full weight can shift or fall. Don't run the opener, don't try to force the door up or down, and keep children and pets away from it until it's secured.

When should garage door rollers be replaced?

Replace rollers when they wobble on their stems, have flat spots or cracked wheels, or when the door rumbles and shudders as it moves. Old steel rollers without bearings are noisy and wear the track. Sealed nylon rollers are quieter and usually last much longer.

Can a bent garage door track be straightened?

Often, yes. A track that is dented or bent slightly can be straightened and re-aligned on site. If the track is kinked, cracked or bent where the curve meets the horizontal section, we replace that section.
